Leading European Brands call for a clear EU framework on carbon neutrality claims to empower consumers in the green transition and incentivise companies to invest and innovate

Brussels, 24 March 2023 – AIM, the European Brands Association, adopts today a joint industry statement to call on EU policymakers to adopt a clear, robust and EU-harmonised framework for carbon neutrality claims, to eliminate greenwashing practices, truly empower consumers in the green transition, whilst keeping the incentive for companies to invest.

In their joint statement, the signatories, representing leading manufacturers of branded consumer goods in Europe, raise their concerns about the unintended consequences of a potential ban on climate and carbon neutrality claims on both consumers and businesses. Brands are committed to investing to achieve carbon neutrality and net zero and they should be allowed to communicate these efforts to their consumers, who then have the appropriate information to choose more sustainable products. Today, existing rules (e.g., existing international standards) can be used as inspiration for the creation of a clear EU framework for the substantiation of these types of claims, which should also be substantiated by feasible implementation plans and verifiable targets.
